Elkhart Dam Removal
Nearly $1.6 million
Chicago District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
January–May 2020 (Vegetation monitoring & maintenance 2021–2022)
PROTECTING A NATURAL RESOURCE
For this project, RBV Contracting was hired to remove a dam that had originally been constructed in the 1830s. The scope of work included:
- Dam demolition
- Cobblestone riffle placement
- Vegetation installation
The completion of the project left the riverbank looking better than it had in almost two centuries, allowing for new recreation and species to travel this portion of the river.
This project included planting vegetation along the newly exposed riverbanks. Because of how this develops over time, our team will be monitoring the vegetation for the next two years. This lets us ensure that everything grows as intended and without impacting the river in any negative way.
Check out the video below to see our team in action on this project.
